You’re probably wondering how much should you pay for professional headshots. If you’re just a regular employee, and your headshot is only going to be on the office wall, it doesn’t need to be that great. As such, you don’t have to invest that much in having your professional headshots taken, as how you look isn’t going to impact your business or career.
On the other hand, if you’re going to use your headshot in any type of promotion or marketing i.e. in a way that’s meant to attract clients, you can’t afford to take chances. By that, I mean you need to get a pro involved. The question is – how much should you be paying?
Roughly 10% of What You Want to Make
When trying to work out the ideal amount to spend on your professional headshots, you first need to determine how much you’re trying to make. For instance, if your goal is to land your dream job that pays $120k a year, you should be spending roughly $1,000 per month on advertising. That’s why the perfect height shot is worth $1,000.
It only takes some rudimentary skills in math to calculate that this means spending roughly 10% of what you intend to make. Another factor that should be considered is that headshots and branding photography are good for around 5-10 years in the professional world.
So, if you’re ideally spending $60k over a period of 5 years on promoting yourself, you’re not going to want to settle for anything but the best. When you’re laying out that much, you want the result to reflect the investment. The only way to ensure this happens is to hire a great photographer.
What Matters: The Quality of the Photographer
Essentially, the amount you should pay for professional headshots depends much on how good the photographer is at their craft. Ask yourself questions like ‘are they a specialist’ or ‘have they hand-tailored each client’s headshots specifically focused on achieving their goals?’ and you’ll get a good feel for the professional you’re considering.
You could find that they’re using the classic sales pitch about standing out from the crowd, yet all of their work seems to look exactly the same. You see, it’s important to find a photographer that’s also a specialist in marketing and branding and who understands what’s required.
Marketing & Branding Expertise is Crucial
Only by employing a photographer with expertise in branding and marketing are you going to get professional headshots that leave the right impression on potential clients. In financial terms, a good headshot that’s aligned with your objective is technically worth 10% of what you expect to make in the next 5 years.
Let’s say you do go on to make $600k over the next 5 years ($120k a year) – which represents a conservative figure if you’re growing as a business – your headshot is worth in the region of $60k. However, a better way to look at things is to think about what you lose by not having a headshot that’s fit for purpose.
Lost Revenue Rests on Fine Margins
If you and your competition are spending the same amount on advertising and you’re showing up in roughly the same position in Google search rankings, the customer has a quandary. Who to choose? The person who gets the business is often the one with the best headshots.
The world we live in is becoming increasingly digital with every passing year, however, something that has remained true since the dawn of time – people are attracted to visually appealing things. The truth is that if your professional headshots don’t look good, you’re effectively turning away clients.
Quality Professional Headshots: Good For Business
If you want to succeed in business, getting high-quality headshots is essential, but it is important to collaborate with a photographer who also understands the complexities of marketing and branding. Only then will you get headshots aligned with your goals, and that win you clients.
